Shooting Stars Krazy Golf

Finalist for best online game at the BIMA Awards 2003 and SXSW 2003

Commissioned to promote the BBC TV series, the brief for this game was to create an engaging online experience to tie in with the bizarre final end-games of each episode. The goal of the design was to capture the fun and frustration of real world crazy golf while providing the simplest possible user interface. The nature of the web (the short attention span of users, and the fact that you are constantly competing with an almost limitless amount of content) means that games need to be instantly accessible. To cater for this, the design mapped all required interactions (look around, aim, play shot) onto the mouse, meaning that no keyboard interaction was needed and that each shot could be taken with one press.

The level design aimed to include all the “classic” crazy golf features such as windmills, loops, ramps and jumps while also adding in new elements to make it feel more in-keeping with the show (with the addition of springpanels, castles, waterfalls and fire-jumps). The game was a great success, being played over 700,000 times in 3 months.

Developed with Macromedia Director, Havok (physics)
All of the levels and art assets were created in Maya.
